Joseph Sanford was born in Berkley, Massachusetts, on June 24, 1761, the son of George Sanford (1726-1820), a French and Indian War veteran, and Mercy Phillips. Captain Joseph Sanford served in the Revolutionary War and held many public offices in Berkley, where he worked as a stonemason and teacher. On September 27, 1785, he married Eleanor Macomber; four of their sons became Congregational ministers. Joseph Sanford died on April 12, 1835.
