Biography

Caleb and Lydia Jones, Quakers from Portland, Me., sent their children, Martha, Caroline, and John W., to a Friends' boarding school in Providence, R.I. The school admitted both boys and girls, though they were kept rigorously separated, and offered a curriculum including a strong dose of the natural sciences.
