James Leonard Sturgeon was born in Melita, Manitoba, on October 5, 1895, the son of Thomas Dickson Sturgeon and Helen Sandiland. The Sturgeon family moved to California in 1913, and lived in Inyokern and Monrovia. James L. Sturgeon attended Stanford University before enlisting in the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force) in Canada on March 26, 1918. He was a pilot cadet at Long Branch, Ontario, and Camp Rathbun, Ontario, until December 1918. Sturgeon received an honorary commission as a second lieutenant in January 1920. He graduated from Stanford in 1922 and later worked for the Texaco Oil Company. He and his wife Lucille lived in Monrovia, California. James Leonard Sturgeon died on December 31, 1986.
