David Baldwin papers 1754-1870 (bulk 1790-1868)
Samuel Abbot Smith was born on April 18, 1829, the son of Samuel Garfield Smith (1799-1842) and Sarah Dorcas Abbot (1801-1831) of Peterborough, New Hampshire, and the grandson of Reverend Abiel Abbot. Following Sarah's death, Samuel G. Smith married Elizabeth Dow of Exeter, New Hampshire. Samuel Abbot Smith attended the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire; received a bachelor's degree from Harvard College in 1849; and earned a divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School in 1853. He preached at the First Congregational Parish in Arlington, Massachusetts, from June 1854 until his death on May 20, 1865. On June 27, 1854, he married Maria Eliza Edes; they had four children: Abbot Edes (b. 1855), Maria Ellen (b. 1857), George Albert (b. 1861), and Samuel Herbert (b. 1864).
