Biography

John Frizell was a quartermaster sergeant in the British Army with the 1st Royal Regiment and the 77th Regiment. In the 1760s he was stationed near Halifax, Canada. After the peace of 1763 with France, many members of the regiment received land grants in North America from the British Government. Frizell may have taken advantage of this opportunity as his journal describes him settling in Dedham and Port Royal (Port Annapolis), Canada. In the 1760s, he worked as a shoemaker and later opened a night school, where he taught math, reading, penmanship, and music.
