Jacob August Riis was born in Ribe, Denmark, on May 3, 1849, and immigrated to the United States in 1870. Riis held numerous odd jobs and lived in poverty until 1877, when he was hired by the New-York Tribune as a crime reporter. Riis worked for the Tribune and the New York Sun until the early 1890s, when he turned his focus to writing about the living conditions of the urban poor, particularly with regard to tenement housing. Riis and his first wife, fellow Danish American Elisabeth Gortz (d. 1905), had six children; after her death, he married Mary Phillips (1877-1967). Jacob A. Riis died on May 26, 1914.
