. Enclosing a letter of introduction from Richard Platt for Backus. Backus was unable to continue his journey due to lack of funds. "I am an adventurer here in persute of business, and shall not hissitate to accept of anything that May be resonably expected." Notes his education and experience in business and as a druggist. Platt's letter, dated 1806 December 16, stresses Backus's poor fortune in business and his hopes as an adventurer. Backus is in need of patronage.
