Arrangement

The Charles Townshend papers were removed from the much larger Buccleuch papers at the Scottish Record Office. The third Duke of Buccleuch, Henry Scott, was Townshend's stepson through his marriage to Caroline (Campbell) Scott, Lady Dalkeith. The box and bundle numbers used by the Scottish Record Office to arrange the papers have been retained, and in most instances the bundle numbers follow Townshend's own original arrangement as listed on the original wrappers. In some cases, the order of items within bundles has been changed to correct errors in numbering, and items that were inadvertently split up in the past have been placed back in association.

The Townshend papers bring together three parts of the Buccleuch papers relating to Charles Townshend:

  • Box VIII
  • Boxes 295-299
  • Bowhill Box

Box VIII, so-called, originated at Dalkeith House and has been put into 17 archival boxes containing approximately 1670 items.

Boxes 295-299 contain approximately 800 items.

The "Bowhill Box" contains 30 items found in the 20th century at the Bowhill House belonging to the Buccleuch dukes.
