Stephen Gore, the son of Jeremiah and Thankful Harris, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 29, 1790. After working with his father's firm, Gores & Harris, he sold property in Boston. In 1836, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he became a grocer and merchant under the firm Gore & Ridgeway. He married Mary Ann Hyde on January 1, 1815, and they had 7 surviving children: Stephen Decatur (1817-1900), Mary Ann (1819-1890), William Henry (1824-1872), Carolina Augusta (1826-1892), George Washington (1827-1892), Abijah Fisk (1831-1906), and Catherine Wilson (b. 1835). Stephen Gore died of sunstroke on September 16, 1845. His sister Sarah married a man named Flint, and lived in Boston.
