David Ballenger (1830-1909) and his wife Nancy lived in Greenville, South Carolina, in the late 19th century. They had one daughter, Emma Elizabeth. During the Civil War, Ballenger served in the 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company D, earning a promotion to captain in May 1863. Though he resigned in October 1863, he served in the Hampton Legion from at least October 1864 to January 1865.
