History

Biography:

Chester H. Sample was born in Romulus (New York) on Aug. 29, 1850, the son of John T. (May 30, 1827-February 9, 1887) and Sally Ann (Miles) Sample (May 11, 1826-). John and Sally were married on April 12, 1848.

Chester attended the State Normal School in Albany (New York), graduating on January 23, 1872. He then earned a medical degree in 1874 and studied for five months at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital in 1893. In 1899, Chester earned a medical degree from the University of Detroit. He was certified by the Michigan Board of Registration in Medicine on March 22, 1900. Dr. Sample then worked as a physician in Saginaw, Michigan, at least until 1923.

On October 17, 1899, Chester married Emma E. Thompson, the granddaughter of Judge John Sayre, in Saginaw. Together they had two children: Grace Antinette (October. 27, 1881- ), who by 1906 married a McClure, and John T. Sample (August 21, 1883- ).

Chester had a brother, Montgomery Sample, who was born in Romulus (New York) on August 15, 1857 and died on December 26, 1860.

The Samples were related to the Leeke, Thompson and Sayre families. (This information is from the collection.)
