History

Organizational History:

The Mount Pleasant Indian School in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, was part of the U.S. Indian school system. Most of the students were local, from Michigan, but others were from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York (state). The school was established by law in 1891, and operated from 1893 to 1934. The grounds and buildings were later used by the State of Michigan for the handicapped. The facility closed in 2008. The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe now owns the original property and buildings. (This information is from the collection and the Morning Sun.)

Collection Scope and Content Note

The collection, 1892-1913, and June 4, 1926-August 15, 1928, compiled in 2003, documents various aspects of the Mount Pleasant Indian School. The collection was compiled from microfilmed Mount Pleasant, Michigan, newspapers in the Clarke Historical Library’s collection, by then Clarke student, Christa Zawaideh, and Clarke staff member, Jennifer Wood, in 2003. The names and dates of the newspapers are written on the back of the photocopied pages, unless they are already part of the copied text. A small amount of cross-referencing, particularly with school employees, has been done. Unfortunately, after Christa graduated in December 2003, the work was not continued. To complete the collection, additional area newspapers would need to be checked for relevant articles from December 25, 1913-June 3, 1926 and August 15, 1928 to the end of 1934.
