History

Biography:

The Association’s purpose was to commemorate and celebrate the centennial of the founding of Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and the signing of the treaty with the Saginaw Chippewa, Swan Creek and Black River bands in October 1864.

Events were held July 18-25, 1964 in Mount Pleasant and included a beard growing contest, a queen contest, a gathering of Native Americans, and the From These Forests production, “a professionally produced stirring story of the founding of Mount Pleasant” with a cast of 400. Various memorabilia were created for the event.

Afterwards, Professor Rolland Maybee and some of his Central Michigan University students created a (scrap) book documenting the history of Mount Pleasant entitled, Mt. Pleasant area and Chippewa Indian Centennial, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, July 18-25, 1964, copies of which are in the Clarke Historical Library. Lists of committee members and officers are found in the beginning of the book.
