History

Biography:

In 1843 Isaac McKeen (died 1848) opened the first law office in Almont, Michigan. His brother, Silas D. McKeen, came to Lapeer County, Michigan, from New Hampshire in 1846 and joined Isaac in his practice. Silas served as a Representative from Lapeer County in 1837 and was elected to the Circuit Court Commission of Lapeer in 1853. Silas was the first clerk of Bristol Township, which after the spring of 1848 was called Almont. He was also recommended for as a notary public in 1849. “He had ability and would have risen to wealth and high station except for his habits.” Silas died prior to 1887. (This information is from Pioneer families and history of Lapeer County, Michigan and Michigan biographies.)
