History

Biography:

Maurice Edron McGaugh (flourished 1948-1991) earned a B.S., A.M. and did graduate study work in Kansas. He also earned a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Chicago in 1948. McGaugh taught Geography (415) at Central Michigan University (CMU) from 1949 to 1975. In the early 1980s he moved to Wichita, Kansas. While at CMU, he served as the chair of the Geography Department from 1961 to 1970. After he left CMU McGaugh continued to teach there occasionally. McGaugh was granted emeritus status, which he held until 1991. There is no further information available on McGaugh. (This information is from the collection.)

Collection Scope and Content Note

The Papers consist mostly of class syllabi and student papers for McGaugh’s Geography 415 classes, 1959-1973. There are no materials related to his serving as Department Chair or any personal materials in the collection, except for his doctoral thesis. In the student papers, one paper was written and researched by Professor Rolland H. Maybee (1901- ), who later taught Michigan local history courses at CMU. Two student papers are oversized.

Processing Note: Numerous maps from the McGaugh Papers were cataloged separately and added to the Clarke Map Collection.
