John Harvey Kellogg was born on February 26, 1852 in Tyrone, Michigan, to John Preston and Anne Jeanette (Stanley) Kellogg. At the age of four, he moved with his family to Battle Creek, Michigan. Upon his graduation from Bellevue Medical College in New York City in 1875, Kellogg returned to Battle Creek and became medical superintendent of the Seventh-Day Adventists’ Health Reform Institute (later the Battle Creek Sanitarium). He would remain there until his death, some 67 years later.

As a respected abdominal surgeon, Dr. Kellogg believed that illness was caused by poor eating habits. In 1895, his search for perfect food led to the development of breakfast food flakes made of wheat, called Granose. Dr. Kellogg’s brother, Will Keith, improved upon the idea by making the flakes out of corn and adding sugar, resulting in the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Co., a manufacturer of breakfast cereals; later the W. K. Kellogg Company; now known as the Kellogg Company. Dr. Kellogg also created and/or improved such foods as peanut butter and granola. Dr. Kellogg died on December 14, 1943 at the age of 91.
