History

Biography:

Albert Hyma was born in Gronigen, The Netherlands, in 1893 and immigrated to the United States in 1910. He attended Calvin College but transferred to the University of Michigan where he earned an A.B., A.M., and finally his Ph.D. in 1922. In 1927 Hyma became a naturalized citizen and married Vera Alberta Nodine. His teaching career began at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where he taught German. After earning his Ph.D. in history, Hyma taught at the University of Michigan from 1924 to 1962. Hyma was an author in the fields of philosophy, theology and history. He was also director of the Grand Rapids Historical Commission, 1962-1963. (This information is from the collection.)
