The collection consists mainly of poetry Cecilia wrote and collected correspondence she received from family and friends. Biographical materials include copies of census records documenting her life and a mortgage.

Biography:

Cecilia E. Vincent was born in June 1836 in Michigan. She was probably related to John and Emeline P. Vincent from New York (State). By 1857 Cecilia married Milton W. Garrett, who was born in October 1832 in New York (State). The Garretts and Vincents were neighbors in 1870 in Redford Township (Wayne County, Michigan). The Garrets lived in Redford for the rest of the lives.

Cecilia and Milton had a son, William J. Garrett, who was born in 1858 or 1859. In 1910 William was married to Anna S. Garrett. By 1920, Anna was either dead or had divorced William.

Milton was a carpenter. He died in 1913. Cecilia then lived with William. She was alive in 1920.

Edgar E. Vincent (1851), Cecilia’s brother lived with the Garretts from 1900 through 1910. He died before 1914. (This information is from the collection).
