Allen Field Smith was born in Chicago in 1895. At the conclusion of his junior year at Denison University, he enlisted in the Army in 1917, after which he engaged in business in Columbus, Ohio. Moving to Newaygo, Michigan, he eventually turned to writing sports adventure stories for boys on a full-time basis under the pen-name, Allen Field. His writing proved not to be a financial success and he turned to editing the local newspaper. Field later became a postal employee in Newaygo. (This information is from the collection.)
