Organizational History:

The Alert Fire Engine Company No. 1 was the fire department for Adrian, Michigan, Lenawee County. The members paid dues to belong to it and fines for the infringement of the rules. The Company participated in community events, such as parades and festivals, raised funds to maintain and improve equipment in the 1840s the Company formed the Adrian Fireman’s Library Association. The Library’s objective was “the social, moral, and intellectual improvement of its members” and “the general diffusion of knowledge.” Non-members could use the Library for a fee or book donation. Eventually the Library’s collection included over 380 books. (This information is from the collection.)
