History

Biography:

Edith “Ede” R. Huber (December 29, 1912- April 20, 2007) was the daughter of Matthias J. and Adelia M. “Maude” Huber, who were farmers in Buckeye, Gladwin County, Michigan. Edith was the second eldest of eleven siblings and worked hard on domestic chores as a young woman, ironing, sewing, and canning to care for her family. Her siblings were Mabel (1911-), Duane (1914-), Ovid (1916-), Wanda (1918-), Eunice (1920-), Ruth (1921-), Donald (1923-), Maysell (1925-), Maxine (1929-), and Patricia (born 1930 or later). Edith was raised with strict religion which did not permit hard feelings or gossip.

In 1931, Edith graduated from Gladwin High School in 1931. She studied at the Gladwin County Normal School from September 1931 through June 1932. About a month later she began studying towards a B. S. Degree at Central Michigan College of Education, now Central Michigan University (CMU). She finally earned her degree from CMU on June 14, 1952, 21 years after she first enrolled. All during this time she taught elementary school. Her first assignment was in Frederic, Michigan, and she taught later in Grayling and Gladwin, where many of her nieces and nephews were her pupils. Edith continued her coursework at least until 1952, perhaps to earn certification for the State of Michigan. In 1961 Edith married David Hamilton. She retired in 1970. David died five years later. In 2007 Edith died at the age of 94. She was remembered as a generous woman who selflessly donated much to her church and family. Collection Scope and Content Note

The collection consists mainly of nine diaries, 1934-1991 (Scattered), a travel journal, 1952-1997 (Scattered), and Edith’s hymnal and Holy Bible, which she read daily. The diaries are a record of the weather, and her activities, including attending church, meetings, and classes, helping with the milk route, cleaning, ironing, sewing, washing, canning, and notes about family and friends. They are not reflective, emotional, or cerebral in nature. There is no discussion of national or world events. Her only major trip was to California in 1952. The biographical materials include a brief biography, scans of family photographs, a real photograph of the graduation class of Gladwin High School, 1931, a 1952 CMU commencement program, a Michigan Education Association Certificate, 1983, and her grade book from Central Michigan College of Education, 1944.
