Camp near Morrisville VaMorrisville (Va.)
Aug 7. 1863

Dear Brother

I received your
letter of the 10th ult and as
I have a few spare moments
will let you know that I am
alive and kicking. I have just
got in from fixing up my tent
which came near being capsized
by a heavy shower and a shed
of pine and cedar boughs that
I had made to day to keep off
part of the heat. Yes, the "Army
of the Potomac has whipped Lee"
in a fair stand up fight. Only
if you could have seen us between
one and three oclock July 3d you
would have said there was not
much stand up on our part
I will give you a little sketch  p.2 Samuel Hodgman letter 1863-08-07 [page 2]
that may assist you a little
in understanding where we
the 7th Michigan,United States. Army. Michigan Infantry Regiment, 7th (1861-1865) were at that
time and another showing
why we were not all made
mince meat of.
12x represents the breast worksGettysburg, Battle of, Gettysburg, Pa., 1863 of rails behind
which we lay. You will see that as
the shots were aimed mainly at the
guns our line of fire was in front  p.3 Samuel Hodgman letter 1863-08-07 [page 3]
of us, the other in our rear
Shot & shell striking in front ricocheted over usGettysburg, Battle of, Gettysburg, Pa., 1863 and the
others were too high to do us
any damage. The 1st sketch
gives you something of an idea
what our chance would have
been to "get to the rear" when all
those guns were in full action
I have been writing to day a
letter of 14 fools cap pages giving
an account of our march and
of the battle. It is not quite as
condensed as the official report
which I shall forward in a few
days to Gen Robertson.Robertson, Jno. (John), 1814-1887 The letter
is addressed to Capt C.M. WalkerWalker, Charles M., 1834-1878
Provost Marshal of the 5th Dist &
our former QM. Well we are
now encamped with a prospect
of staying a little while if
the rebs dont object

I am getting business along
pretty well & hope to have
a better chance to write to
my relatives & friends.
I got hold of the wrong letter
I have received one of a later date
from you & Mr Bowen also one
from Charlie. Love to all
Mother has not written in a
long time
