Bolivar Va.Bolivar (W. Va.)
Mar 16th

Dear Mother

WeUnited States. Army. Michigan Infantry Regiment, 7th (1861-1865). Company I left our camp
near PoolesvillePoolesville (Md.) last Tuesday
for Harpers FerryHarpers Ferry (W. Va.) to join our division
at Winchester.Winchester (Va.) We came by canal
to the ferry and arrived there
Wednesday morning In the afternoon
we marched to CharlestownCharles Town (W. Va.) of
John BrownBrown, John, 1800-1859 celebrity where we
bivouacked for the night. Thursday
at two o'clock we started for
Berryville,Berryville (Va.) half way to WinchesterWinchester (Va.)
We halted near the town having
marched 12 miles Many of the
men were quite foot sore. Carrying
a heavy knapsack being something
new to them it was rather tough
Mine I think weighs, with all the
traps, about 40 pounds. I stand
it well. The 7th stands the march
better than most other regiments

Friday Morning we had orders to return
to Harpers Ferry.Harpers Ferry (W. Va.) It is rumored that we
are to join Burnside.Burnside, Ambrose Everett, 1824-1881 At 8 we - the
whole divison - 14 or 15 Regiments - were
on our way back not having found
any rebels to fight- Early in the morning
Lieut ShafterShafter, William R. got wind of the whereabouts of
a rebel major & taking McFarlinMcFarlin, Hulet P. & one private
with him went about 4 miles and
brought him in. If I had time I would
write more about it. Friday afternoon we
bivouacked on our old ground at CharlestonCharles Town (W. Va.)
Saturday morning we again started for
the ferry and arrived about noon at
BolivarBolivar (W. Va.) where we now are quartered in
Secesh houses. Our company is in
a double, 3 story brick dwelling house
& we are taking our comfort while we
can. We received our new guns yes-
terday - splendid ones - Springfield
rifles and have the patent cartridges
with combustible wrappers- We dont have
to tear them at all
Paper is scarce1 & so is time. I must write
to the Telegraph for Shafter giving an
account of his exploits in taking the
secesh major. I am well and
have been so since I started
Love to all
