The biographical and historical materials focus on Dexter Mason Ferry's life and career. Dexter Mason Ferry Papers 1849-1910 [series]

This Dexter Mason Ferry Papers series consists of six subseries comprising 4 linear feet. Given Ferry's varied levels of involvement, the business materials are broken down into Business Interests (arranged in a rough chronological order); Business Investments and Business Properties (each of which is arranged alphabetically). The property materials can provide insights to Detroit development to the researcher well versed in local geography. The bulk of the 2 linear feet of the Personal subseries consist of two runs of correspondence (family and general), financial papers, and scrapbooks. The rather abbreviated Philanthropy subseries only hints at the breadth of Ferry's interest in education and the arts. Finally, the linear foot given to the Political subseries is dominated by scrapbooks of newspaper articles regarding Ferry's run for governor.

Dexter Mason Ferry, Jr., Papers 1881-1963 [series]

The Dexter Mason Ferry, Jr. series comprises roughly 18 linear feet of materials arrayed in four subseries: Business, Personal, Philanthropic, and Political. The Business subseries reflects the diversification of the family's interests and consists of 5 linear feet arranged in a single alphabet. This alphabet includes firms in which Ferry had proprietary or controlling interest, and the more generic headings of: Banks and Trusts, Miscellaneous Investments, and Properties. The Personal subseries comprises 7.5 linear feet and is likewise arranged in a single alphabet according to both type of material (appointment books, correspondence, financial papers, and scrapbooks) and topic (army, education, and properties). This rather awkward arrangement was kept in order to maintain as far as possible the order created by Dexter M. Ferry, III's personal archivist. Hewing to this original order has resulted in three runs of correspondence (family, general-alphabetical, and general-chronological). The Philanthropic subseries' four feet of material range alphabetically from the Detroit Institute of Art to the University of Michigan. Within that alphabet, a diverse run of benefactors are arrayed alphabetically under Miscellaneous. The Political subseries is arranged in chronological order and comprises less than a single linear foot.
