Legal Division 1991-2002 [series] (18.4 linear feet)

The Legal Division provided legal advice to the Governor about pending state lawsuits, ethics, Freedom of Information and Open Meetings Acts, and elections. It acted as liaison between the governor's office and the Attorney General and judicial branch and advised the governor about redistricting, judicial appointments, extraditions and pardons. It oversaw the relationship of the state with Michigan's Native American tribes and drafted Executive Orders and Directives. It also was responsible for emergency management and security, and its duties include briefing the Governor on September 11, 2001.

The subseries in the Legal Division include Executive Orders; Executive directives and proclamations; Executive clemency; Judicial appointments; Litigation; Topical files; Indians - state tribal affairs; Legal Counsel and Deputy Legal Counsel files; Redistricting; and Judicial appointments.

Executive Orders 1991-2002 [subseries] (5.5 linear feet)

The "Executive Orders" subseries contains all of the operative documents which reorganized the state government. They are not originals, which are maintained in Lansing by the Secretary of State. As of this date (Feb. 2004) the titles of the executive orders can be browsed at http://www.state.mi.us/e-mi/gov/eo/ which can help provide subject access or the researcher may browse the paper index within the series itself.
