Subject Files. Michigan – Outstate [subseries]:

The photographs and slides typically depict individuals, businesses and scenes from cemeteries and churches. Individuals include members of specific families and prominent people in Polish American communities. Cemetery scenes include depictions of tombstones. Photographs and slides relating to churches depict both the exterior and interior of the buildings and often include images of stained glass windows. In some cases, prints of photographs and pages from church anniversary books are present. Every attempt was made to preserve the original order of photographs and slides (Thus, slides may not necessarily be filed in alphabetical order.). Publications include area phonebooks and newsletters and journals relating to local history, genealogy and Polish Americans. One notable publication is The Eaglet. J. William Gorski served as Editor-in-Chief of this journal, published by the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan. The journal featured articles on Polish genealogy, biography and local history. Specific Polish families, churches and communities were often examined. Issues of The Eaglet are filed with the church or town being documented.

Subject Files. Michigan – Wayne County [subseries]:

The “Art and Culture” file contains materials on Polish cultural events and organizations in the Detroit metropolitan area. Items include magazine and newspaper clippings. A brochure announces the 1984 Bank of Commerce Ethno-Art Exhibition at the Hamtramck Public Library. Brochures, slides and a program pertain to the Rzeszow Dancers, who recite traditional Polish dances. Finally, there is a Polish Heritage Catalog from the Polish Art Center of Hamtramck. This catalog lists Polish heritage items such as ethnic music recordings, cookbooks, flags and dolls. It also lists items such as t-shirts, bumper stickers and jewelry that are fitted with Polish-themed images and messages.

The “Biography Files” provide information on certain individuals of Polish heritage. These are arranged alphabetically, by surname. These materials consist of lineage charts, some family photographs, short family histories and short biographies and autobiographies. The “Catholic Church in Detroit” file documents the Roman Catholic Church and includes an issue of the Orchard Lake Schools newsletter that focuses on the Polish Seminary in Detroit, and correspondence (1982-1983) between Gorski and the Felician Sisters at Madonna College. The letters concern Gorski’s research on the Felician Sisters order, listing books that Gorski borrowed and discussing meeting arrangements.

“Church and cemetery” files include church bulletins, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photograph copies of church anniversary books and photographs. The cemetery photographs depict general cemetery scenes, tombstones and portraits of interred individuals. In some cases, the hard copy images were also digitally scanned onto compact disc. In such instances, the disc appears in the collection before the actual photographs. Other photographs include exterior images of churches and prints of church anniversary souvenir book photographs and pages.

Several folders contain photographic prints of the 1907 Polish Business Directory of Detroit. These prints depict prominent Polish American citizens of 1907. They include businessmen, clergymen, physicians and military veterans, among others. There are also group photographs of organizations, churches, businesses and some general scenes of the Detroit area. The Business Directory images also appear on slides and were digitally scanned onto compact disc. The “Dom Polski” file contains thirty-eight additional photographic prints of the 1907 Business Directory. These are largely portraits of 1907 members of the Dom Polski (or “Domu Polskiego”). A Dom Polski was a community center. These images have been digitally scanned onto a compact disc, and this disc is present in the file.

The Wayne County material also contains photographs of buildings on Michigan Avenue (Detroit) and slides in binders documenting the East side of Detroit, the West side of Detroit, and Hamtramck. The slides are arranged, classified and numbered by subjects. A master index appears in the first folder of each set of folders.

Subject Files – Ontario, Canada [subseries]:

As with the previous two subseries, this one focuses on Polish communities, covering local history, organizations, families and churches. There are photographs, slides, church bulletins, publications and newspaper clippings. Visual material depicts individuals, families, organizations (including the Barry’s Bay Baseball Club), houses, churches (both interior and exterior scenes), cemeteries and general nature and town scenes. The Barry’s Bay and Combemere files also contain a few photographs of antique farm equipment. Cemetery images depict general cemetery scenes, tombstones and portraits placed on tombstones. The publications include church anniversary books and souvenir/history books of various communities. The “Ontario – General” file contains an issue of The Eaglet devoted to Renfrew County. This features an article on Polish immigration to the county and articles on some Polish towns, cemeteries and churches there.
