As is needful, add together the added artabai, = 400; add together also the subtracted artabai, [= 50]; from these subtract the added artabai, [40, =] 10 artabai; add to the 100 artabai of wheat, = 110; this is the number. Proof: Add 15, = 125, [and] subtract 20; remainder, 105. Add [25] = 130; subtract 30; remainder, the given 100 artabai of wheat.

  This medium-brown papyrus is regularly cut off at all sides with a small rectangular piece cut off in the lower right corner.One kollesis visible in the left hand side. A few significant abrasions running vertically in the left and right hand sides of the papyrus, possibly where the papyrus was folded (TC).

  Palaeographic Description

  Semi-cursive of the early Roman period. Fairly generous margins have been left to the right (2.8 cm) and at the top (3.2 cm). The entire text has been crossed out as if erased (TC).

  "Pausiris, son of Pausiris, grandson of Ammonios, his mother being Thaesis, daughter of Dioskous, of the city of Oxyrhynchos, a Persian of the Epigone, to Tauris, her mother being Tauris, daughter of Annibas of the same city, who is acting with her guardian, her maternal uncle Thoonis, son of Annibas. I acknowledge that I have received from you at the Serapeum in the city of Oxyrhynchos through the bank of Ammonios, Sarapion and Co, [the capital sum of] three hundred [drachmai] of Augustan silver coinage, [that is 300 drachmai of silver], which includes one pair of gold earrings, forty drachmai in value, a chain of a weight of thirty drachmai of uncoined silver, [(something)], one hundred and sixty drachmai in value, and [(something)], worth eighty drachmai. I shall repay the aforesaid capital to you within thirty days of request. I further acknowledge that if there is a separation while you are pregnant, I shall pay you, aside from the aforesaid capital, another 100 drachmai of silver for the expense of childbirth. If I do not make repayment [as written, I shall pay] you the aforesaid capital with a penalty of one-half, [and you have the right of exaction upon me and everything] I own. [This document is enforceable wherever it is pro]duced [and for everybody producing it."

  Copy. The third year of the Emperor Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, the 18th of the month of Pharmouthi, in Bacchias in the division of Herakleides of the Arsinoite nome.

  Taoris, about fifty years old . . ., and Didyme, about forty-five years old, with a scar on her forehead on the right, and Soueris, about . . . years old . . ., who are, all three of them, daughters of Petsiris, Persian women, and mutual sureties for recovery, and for whom the guardians are: for Taoris and Didyme the husband of Didyme, Herakleides, the son of Chairemon, about . . . years old, with a scar on his left . . .; for Soueris her own husband Onnophris, the son of Onnophris, about . . . years old, with a scar . . ., acknowledge to Maron, son of Hermas, about 41 years old, with a scar in the middle of his forehead below the hair, that they have received from him a loan of two hundred silver drachmai in coined money forthwith from hand to hand out of the house, and that instead of the interest thereon, the parties of the first part have agreed that Maron, his representatives, and whomever he wishes shall reside for five years from the aforesaid time in the property which belongs to the parties of the first part themselves, in the aforesaid village of Bacchias, viz., a ninth share of a house and courtyard with all the appurtenances in the so-called street of Borroanon; of which a third share belongs to the same Maron.

  Accordingly let the parties of the first part and their representatives guarantee the provisions of this contract of habitation to Maron and his representatives with full guarantee both for the duration of the loan established by the contract and for as long as additional lodging is necessary. And they will deliver the designated ninth share of the house and courtyard unencumbered, unpledged, not offered as collateral, and free from all debts, both public and private, and they will see that no one hinders Maron or his representatives from living in this property, lodging others therein, collecting the rents, and using all the appurtenances of the house and courtyard in common.

  And at the expiration of the period let the parties of the first part repay the two hundred silver drachmai to Maron, and until they repay they agree that Maron shall reside as stated above. And if it appears that Maron has undergone expense in repairing or also in building or for any other purpose in the aforesaid ninth share of the house and courtyard, it is necessary that the parties of the first part repay Maron himself without any delay or subterfuge.

  The eleventh year of the Emperor Caesar Vespasian Augustus, 29th of the month Sebastos, in Karanis in the Herakleides division of the Arsinoite nome. Horos, son of Onnophris, a Persian of the epigone, about 35 years old, with a scar on his left knee, acknowledges to Diodora, daughter of Heron, about 20 years old, unmarked, with her guardian, her husband Chairemon, son of Chairemon, about 23 years old, with a scar on his right shin, that he has received from her at once from hand to hand out of the house the loan of forty-eight drachmai of silver at interest at the rate of one drachme (per mina per month); and that he has also received the value of two artabai of new, clean and unadultered wheat measured in the six-choinix measure of the broker of Karanis. The party of the first part, Horos, shall repay (the loan) to Diodora in the month of Pauni of the present year, and if he does not repay in accordance with what is written, he shall pay the money increased by one half, and for each artaba of the wheat he shall pay in addition the market price that shall be the highest current at that time, the right of execution resting with [Diodora] against Horos and [against his] property . . .

  The 1st hand is a somewhat elegant, upright cursive reminiscent of that of the writer of P.Mich. III, 195, 197, and 198 although slightly less florid [see also P.Mich. III, 189]; the 2nd employs very crude uncials; the 3rd is an irregular cursive which appears again in the second subscription to P.Mich. III, 196; and the docket at the bottom was written by the secretary who made the corresponding notation in P.Mich. III, 189 and 195. (Boak)

  Translation

  The fourth [year] of the Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus, the twenty-[fourth] of the month Kaisareios, Mesore 24, in Bacchias of the division of Herakleides of the Arsinoite [nome].

  Hermas, son of Ptolemaios, the son of Ammonios, about eighty-five years old, with a scar [in the middle of his forehead], acknowledges to Tapekysis, daughter of Horos, the son of Katoites, about forty-five years old with a scar on her upper lip [to the left], acting under the guardianship of her husband Horos, son of Horos, about fifty years old with a scar on his left eyebrow, that he, the party of the first part, [has received from her] a sum of [three hundred] drachmai of coined silver of Augustan issues in cash from hand to hand out of the house, and that instead of the interest thereon the party of the first part has agreed that she and her heirs and whomever she may wish shall reside, for so long as the party of the first part owes [the aforesaid] money, in the dwelling that belongs to him, the party of the first part, in the aforesaid village, [of which the neighbors] are, as the parties have dictated in mutual agreement; on the south [building sites] belonging to Katoites, son of Menches, and his associates and for a certain part a portion of a common entrance and exit; on the north a royal road; on the west building sites belonging to the aforesaid Katoites and his associates; on the east a courtyard of Horos, son of Katoites, the son of Belles, and his brothers; and that the party of the first part and his heirs guarantee the conditions of [this] contract of occupation to Tapekysis and her heirs with [every] guarantee, and let the party of the first part see that no one prevents Tapekysis or her heirs from [occupying the premises] and lodging others therein and collecting the rents and using [all] the appurtenances without hindrance. And if it shall appear that Tapekysis has undergone expense for repair or construction, [and] the party of the first part, Hermas, [wishes] to pay back the aforesaid money, let him repay it along with the aforesaid money, the responsability resting upon her Tapekysis.

  Signatory for Tapekysis [and her] guardian, Ammonios, son of Dioskoros, about 45 years old with a scar on his forehead to the right below the hair.

  (2nd hand) I, [Hermas], son of Ptolemaios, acknowledge that I have received from Tapekysis the three hundred [drachmai] in silver in cash and in place of the interest I shall agree that she shall [live in] the aforesaid house for so long as I may owe it, [and . . .], and I shall guarantee (it) with every guarantee and shall deliver it free from [. . .], and (whenever I shall repay the money), if it shall appear that she has undergone any expense, I shall repay it as stated above.

  (3rd hand) I, [Tapekysis], daughter of Horos, acting under the guardianship of my husband Horos, have received the agreement as aforesaid. I, Ammonios, son of Dioskoros, wrote for them as they are illiterate.

  Tauris, daughter of [Ninis], about forty years old with a scar on her left forearm near the wrist, acting [under the guardianship] of her paternal relative Horos, son of Orsenouphis, about [. . .]-five years old with a scar on his right shin, acknowledges to Tapekysis, daughter of Horos, about 48 years old with a scar on her [upper] lip to the left, acting under the guardianship of her husband Horos, son of Horos, about 53 years old with a scar on his left eyebrow, that she, the party of the first part, has received from her in coined silver of Augustan issue the sum of sixty drachmai in cash from hand to hand out of the house. And, instead of the interest thereon, she, the party of the first part, has agreed with Tapekysis that she and her heirs and whomsoever she may wish shall reside, for such time as the party of the first part ower her the aforesaid money, in the ninth and twenty-seventh common and undivided share of roomed dwellings which belongs to her, the party of the first part, in the village by inheritance from her father, of which the neighbors are, as they have dictated in mutual agreement: on the south building sites of Katoites, the son of Menches, and his associates and for a certain part a portion of a common entrance and exit, on the north a royal road, on the west building sites of Katoites, son of Menches, and his associates, on the east a court belonging to Horos, son of Katoites, the son of Belles, and his brothers.   The 1st hand shows a marked inclination to avoid sharp angles in letter-forms and un numerous instances the perpendicular stroke of beta and phi is extended to the first and second lines below that in which the letter occurs.   Contract of loan of 200 drachmai by Thermouthion to her husband Dioskous, more or less replacing the dowry in a marriage without written contract; the text further precises that the money came from part of a house which she had inherited from her father and had sold recently (if not the same day), and that Thermouthion had given another 140 drachmai, also coming from the sale of part of a house, to her mother, as repayment to a (similar) loan from her mother to her father. The other copy of this contract of loan was cancelled when the loan was repaid one year later, after the divorce of Thermouthion and Dioskous. (See also P.Mich. III, 194)

  Dioskous, son of Pausiris, and his wife Thermouthion, daughter of Achilleus, acting with her guardian Diogenes, son of Pasion and husband of her mother Ploutarche, all residents of the city of Oxyrhynchus, make acknowledgment in the street; Thermouthion, that she has not given to her aforesaid husband Dioskous more than the sum of 200 drachmai of imperial and Ptolemaic silver coinage out of the price for which she, acting with her guardian, the same Dioskous, sold to Didymos, son of Didymos, her portion of a house inherited from her father in the Hippodrome Quarter, because she has paid the remainder of the price to her mother Ploutarche, daughter of Harpaesis, toward the amount owed to her by Achilleus, son of Pastous, the designated father of Thermouthion and the former, and now deceased, husband of Ploutarche, according to a receipt that she (Ploutarche) has given to her; and Dioskous, that he has now received from Thermouthion the aforesaid 200 drachmai of silver and that he must repay it to her without interest within sixty days from the day that it is demanded of him or she has the right of execution regarding this amount both upon him and upon all his property as if in accordance with a court decision. This agreement is binding.

  Contract of loan of 200 drachmai by Thermouthion to her husband Dioskous, more or less replacing the dowry in a marriage without written contract; the text further precises that the money came from part of a house which she had inherited from her father and had sold recently (if not the same day), and that Thermouthion had given another 140 drachmai, also coming from the sale of part of a house, to her mother, as repayment to a (similar) loan from her mother to her father. This copy of the contract of loan was cancelled when the loan was repaid one year later, after the divorce of Thermouthion and Dioskous. (See also P.Mich. III, 194)

  [. . ., son of . . .], Persian of the epigone, about fifty years old, with a scar in the middle of his forehead, acknowledges to Hermas, son of Ptolemaios, about fifty-two years old, with a scar in the middle of his forehead, that he has received from him sixty drachmai of coined silver forthwith from hand to hand out of the house, and instead of the interest on this sum, he, the party of the first part, has agreed that Hermas and his representatives and whomever he wishes shall reside for one year from the above-mentioned date in the twenty-seventh share of roomed properties and all the appurtenances, which belongs to him, the party of the first part, by inheritance from his father, held in common and undivided ownership with Hermas and others in the aforesaid village; and he, the party of the first part, and his representatives with full guarantees both for the time stipulated by the contract and for whatever time lodging is necessary. And let the party of the first part see to it that no one prevents Hermas and his representatives from occupying the designated property, lodging others therein, collecting the rents, and using all its appurtenances without hindrance. And at the expiration of the period let the party of the first part repay the sixty drachmai of silver to Hermas, the right of execution resting with Hermas on the party of the first part and on all his property as if in accordance with a legal judgment.
