Temple Mound, Fort Walton, Florida. Sign: Red Buckeye, Aesculus pavia L. "The fishing tree." This shrub is found from Virginia to Florida, west to central Texas and up the Mississippi River valley to southern Illinois. The common name of "buckeye" comes from the resemblance of the hulled fruit to the eye of a deer.
